Greetings, brothers and sisters. This is Dr. James Perry continuing with our series where we seek to
explore the deeper meanings of our relationship with Jesus Christ. Over the years, the heavenly
Father has revealed many revelations of spiritual truth to me, and I want to share them with you. This
morning we ponder why spiritual helpers rarely interfere in material affairs.
And now, sit back and listen to today's message.
Why Spiritual Helpers Rarely Interfere in Material Affairs
"Then the high priest rose up ... and were filled with indignation and laid their hands on the Apostles
and put them in the common prison. But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and
brought them forth, and said, 'Go stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this
life'." Acts, Chapter 5, Verses 19 and 20.
Brothers and sisters, today we shall examine some of the reasons why spiritual helpers seldom
interfere in our material affairs. In our discussion, we should keep in mind that we are talking abut
spiritual helpers not material ones, though they sometimes manipulate the material environment for
spiritual purposes. Hopefully this discussion will stimulate us once more to search for answers to
these material problems, and inspire us to take seriously the business of our souls' growth and
development.
Spiritual helpers are here to make sure that we get the most out of our moral and spiritual
environments, which are rich in stimuli. But before moving on to the more focused examination of
why spiritual helpers seldom intervene, lets look at the few circumstances in which they do.
When a given individual plays a key function in the spiritual economy, whose protection during that
period of function is essential, spiritual helpers intervene. A known example is when Peter was
released from prison by a spiritual being. This was essential because Peter was to be a key actor in
spreading the new Gospel. Had he perished at that junction, it is quite possible that the whole
movement would have been delayed substantially. But the key emphasis here is not the individual
but the function of the individual. In most cases the individual is never aware that a super material
intervention has taken place. And we know that Paul was gotten out of prison by spiritual helpers.
And we know what a mighty influence Paul has played in the spread of Christianity.
Now let us focus on the reasons why spiritual beings do not intervene in the personal affairs of
material creatures. The task of spiritual helpers is to assist us with our spiritual development, which
involves spiritually transcending mortal life by growing in towards spiritual perfection, such that
when our material bodies dissolve, we will live on in higher realms of the universe as the person we
have come to be. Our helpers so manipulate and associate circumstances that they are able to
maximize the various environmental stimuli, ranging from the material to the spiritual. They assist
in presenting us with stimuli that will help us to grow and develop. As we choose righteously, we
grow morally and spiritually. These stimuli can cause quite a bit of emotional stress, at least this is
true until the time that we recognize their function. But oftentimes we long for the tranquil material
peace that forever ebbs and flows, so that we come to see new challenges as an affliction rather than
an act of mercy. As these spiritual helpers work, we are constantly being presented with new ideas,
new ideals, new desires, urges and impulses on the inside and constant environmental stimuli on the
outside. The impact of such a collision is that we are forced to act in one way or another.
These spiritual helpers might be likened to an expert chef who in the process of preparing a meal
adds various ingredients in just the right amounts, and cooks them at just the right temperature for
just the right time. Our helpers are masters of the stimuli that we need at just the right time, and in
just the right amount, for the exact amount of duration. They manipulate the many spiritual impulses
that impinge upon us and modify them so they are both personal and in a form that we can use. They
are persistent workers and find great delight when we finally reach that stage of development where
we fully recognize their function and cooperate with them.
All of these internal and external stimuli have the unique purpose of assisting us to obey the Father's
command, to in fact become perfect even as the heavenly Father is perfect. And when the pressures
of these stimuli are sustained, then forthwith emerges a spiritual character, one who understands the
true nature of adversity and who has learned to thrive in the face of it. Now in closing, we may not
fully comprehend the wisdom of this policy of not interfering, but we certainly do comprehend the
effects of it--growth.
This concludes today's message on understanding why spiritual helpers rarely interfere in material
affairs. We hope you find something in this message to ponder and pray about as you go about your
day.
Until next time, this is Dr. James Perry.
